Overall, the Internet is a safe place to do business. I know that statement flies in the face of all of those rip-off stories you read and hear everyday, but the fact of the matters is that most of the people doing business on the ‘Net are legitimate.
However, not everyone lives up to the standards of ethical business. The ‘Net is a very, very large barrel. It’s not surprising, then, to find a few bad apples in there. That’s right, there are bad guys who are more than ready, willing and able to take you for every penny they can steal.
To make matters worse, those thieves often don’t look that way. In fact, they often look like some of the most legitimate businesses you can imagine. So, how do you protect yourself from becoming a victim? What can you do when you can’t spot the difference between the villains and the heroes?
It all comes down to due diligence. You need to do your homework before you decide to get involved with any business opportunity, product sale or other online transaction.
Take the time to know the people with whom you might be doing. Look for credible reviews of their business. See if they have a solid web presence. Find out what others in their industry have to say about them. See how their claims stack up against the competition and whether they seem reasonable. Read the fine print, check for a guarantee, call their mommies on the phone and conduct a stakeout of their homes for at least seventy two hours.
Okay, those last few ideas are over the top. But you get the idea, right? If you don’t want to get stung, you need to do your research. It may seem like a load of work, but as long as you stop short of calling parents and spying on houses, it’s actually something you can do relatively quickly with a bit of Googling.
In most cases, things will work out the way the should. Again, there’s no reason to live in fear–the ‘Net is an honest place to do business overall. When things aren’t what they seem, you’ll be glad you made the extra effort. Don’t be a victim!
